Needing
to clear your throat is a sign that unbeneficial mucus
is covering your vocal chords, impairing their potential
to phonate efficiently. The action of coughing or clearing
the throat results in the vocal chords slamming together
in order to loosen unwanted mucus. Unfortunately, such
an action also causes undue stress on the vocal muscles.
A much better, albeit a bit odd, method of clearing the
throat is achieved by opening the mouth and exhaling strongly.
This will hopefully loosen the mucus. If not, go one step
farther and gently close the vocal chords while forcefully
exhaling. Such an action will assist in loosening the
mucus without making the muscles slam together.
Although a new method of
clearing the throat may take some time to incorporate,
you may find it beneficial to your vocal health.
